Spiaggia del Cannitello

Spiaggia del Cannitello stretches along the Strait of Messina, in southern Calabria, a few kilometers north of Reggio di Calabria. This portion of the Ionian coast faces Sicily, separated by the turbulent waters of the strait, whose unpredictable currents have shaped the local geography since antiquity. The surrounding coast, dotted with small coves and successive beaches, has a fragmented character typical of this region where plate tectonics have created a rugged and changing landscape. Backed by a narrow hinterland, the beach is distinguished by its relative accessibility compared to the wilder coves that dot the strait. 1.3 km to the south is another local beach, while Spiaggia delle Sabbie nere, famous for its black volcanic sand, is 6.6 km to the south. The site offers a direct swimming experience, without formal tourist facilities, making it a place frequented mainly by locals rather than mass tourist flows. The atmosphere remains that of a neighborhood beach, where the proximity of the strait imposes its weather conditions and particular maritime rhythms. The absence of official supervision and developed infrastructure characterizes this coastal stretch. No Blue Flag label certifies water quality, and access is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. The site remains a choice for those seeking unadorned swimming, directly connected to Calabrian daily life.

About this spot

The name Cannitello derives from the Latin *canneta*, referring to the reed beds that once bordered the wetlands of the strait. This beach is part of the tumultuous geological history of the Strait of Messina, a tectonic fault zone where the African and Eurasian plates create constant seismic activity. During the earthquakes of 1908 that devastated Reggio di Calabria and Messina, the coastline underwent major topographical changes. Today, Cannitello remains a place where local fishermen mingle with occasional swimmers, perpetuating a millennia-old relationship with these mythological waters that the ancients feared.
