Spiaggia de La Forbice

Spiaggia de La Forbice extends along the Tyrrhenian coast of eastern Sicily, at coordinates 38.45°N / 14.96°E, in the Syracuse region. This portion of the coastline unfolds between Spiaggia di Vinci, 1.4 km to the north, and Spiaggia Valle Muria, 2.5 km to the south. The coastline here is characterized by a succession of small coves and rocky outcrops, typical of this area where limestone formations gradually plunge into a deep blue Mediterranean Sea. The shore consists entirely of pebbles and small stones, offering a rough texture underfoot. Unlike its immediate neighbors which have more uniform profiles, this beach displays a wilder character, with accumulations of coastal rocks and less developed access areas. The water, crystalline and shallow at the edge, quickly reveals rocky seabeds. The general atmosphere remains that of a sparsely populated coast, where Mediterranean vegetation descends to the first stones. No infrastructure facilities are reported: no toilets, showers, or designated parking. The beach does not have the Blue Flag label and remains unsupervised. Access for people with reduced mobility is not provided, and the policy regarding dogs is not documented. This configuration makes it a place of free access, without lifeguard supervision.

About this spot

The name "La Forbice" evokes scissors in Italian, likely a reference to the shape of the coast or a characteristic rock formation. This region of Syracuse, once the heart of Magna Graecia, retains traces of a millennial history in its waters and shores. The pebble beaches of the southeastern Sicilian coast result from the erosion of local limestones, a geological process that has shaped these landscapes since the Miocene epoch. According to local fishermen's tales, these coves long served as natural anchorages for small fishing boats, before coastal roads reshaped maritime traffic patterns.
