Embouchure de l'Aubonne

L'Embouchure de l'Aubonne extends along the northern shore of Lake Geneva, in French-speaking Switzerland, in the immediate vicinity of the town of Allaman. The river that gives it its name flows directly into the lake, creating a transition zone where fresh waters meet the large Alpine lake. This portion of the Lake Geneva shoreline is characterized by a succession of small beaches and undeveloped natural areas, typical of this Vaudois coast where wine villages dominate the hinterland. The site is distinguished by its natural character and direct access from the lake. Located only 0.7 km from Plage d'Allaman and 2.3 km from that of Perroy, L'Embouchure retains relative intimacy compared to its more frequented neighbors. The river's mouth creates a particular dynamic: depending on the season and flow rates, the area offers variable configurations, sometimes with a small pebble delta, sometimes with gentler shores. The immediate landscape mixes lakeside vegetation and vineyards in the background, recalling that this region is at the heart of one of Switzerland's oldest wine-growing areas. No standardized tourist facilities mark the site, which remains without official supervision. Access is via local paths connecting the surrounding villages. This absence of infrastructure reflects the status of L'Embouchure: a natural point of interest rather than an organized seaside destination, where swimming remains possible but is at the visitor's initiative.

About this spot

Aubonne, a tributary of Lake Geneva from the Vaudois plateau of Jura, has shaped this estuary over millennia. The name of the river itself dates back to Indo-European roots evoking running water. Historically, this coastal area served as a landing and exchange point for riparian communities; remains of Roman settlements discovered nearby attest to the strategic importance of Lake Geneva as a communication route. Today, this estuary remains a passage point for hikers and cyclists following the Lavaux wine routes, less spectacular than its world heritage-listed terraces but imbued with the same geological and human history that defines this region.
