Pointe de Promenthoux

La Pointe de Promenthoux juts into Lake Geneva at latitude 46.39°N, longitude 6.27°E, on the Swiss shore of the lake. Located in the canton of Vaud, this rocky point marks a transition between the more urbanized shores of Chablais and the more secluded areas to the east. Lake Geneva, in this sector, displays its cold and deep waters characteristic of Alpine lakes, while the Alps form an imposing mountainous backdrop to the south and east. The Swiss coast of Lake Geneva is distinguished by the alternation of alluvial beaches and rocky promontories, of which Promenthoux is one of the most prominent examples. La Pointe de Promenthoux presents itself as a natural advance of rocks and pebbles, contrasting with the developed swimming areas located 3.3 and 3.4 kilometers away. Unlike the more accessible beaches in the area, this site retains a more raw and less frequented character. Direct access to the water is via smooth rocks and pebbles, while the depth of the lake increases rapidly. The northwest exposure of the site makes it sensitive to lake winds, creating variable conditions depending on the seasons and weather. Typical Alpine lake riparian vegetation borders the point, with willows and reeds framing the access points. No infrastructure is present on this natural site: no parking, toilets, showers, or restaurant. The site is not supervised and is not Blue Flag certified. Wheelchair access is not possible due to the rocky topography and lack of facilities. La Pointe de Promenthoux remains a preserved natural space, intended for visitors seeking a less structured experience than the official swimming areas of Lake Geneva.

About this spot

The name "Promenthoux" likely derives from the Latin "promunturium" (promontory) and the Savoyard suffix "-oux," common in Chablais toponymy. This rocky point was formed during the retreat of the Quaternary glaciers that shaped Lake Geneva. Unlike the developed pebble beaches that developed around the lake in the 20th century, Promenthoux has retained its original geomorphological appearance. Local residents of Chablais have long frequented it as a discreet fishing spot, and it remains a landmark for Lake Geneva navigators who recognize it by its characteristic silhouette from afar.
