Located on the north shore of Lake Geneva, in Lausanne, the Vieux-Port d'Ouchy swimming area occupies one of the most historic shores in French-speaking Switzerland. The port itself, a former river landing stage that has become a residential and tourist district, opens directly onto the lake at an altitude of 372 meters. The waters of Lake Geneva, cold and crystalline, lap a predominantly rocky and concrete shore, characteristic of urban port developments. The surrounding coastline alternates between modern port facilities and 19th-century architectural remnants, creating a semi-industrial, semi-heritage atmosphere typical of alpine lakeside towns. The swimming area itself remains a modest portion of the lakefront, integrated into the dense urban fabric of the Old Port. Unlike Plage CH, 3.1 kilometers away and equipped with more developed seaside infrastructure, or Plage du port du Vieux-Stand, 3.7 kilometers away, which offers more complete facilities, this area retains a raw and authentic character. Access is directly from the quays, with no transition to a sandy or pebbly beach. Swimmers mingle with the moorings of small sailboats and strollers along the promenade. The water, though icy even in summer, offers remarkable transparency, allowing one to see the rocky bottom. Access to swimming is free and open, without official supervision. No dedicated facilities (showers, changing rooms, parking) are indicated in the immediate vicinity. The site does not benefit from the Blue Flag label. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed, as the quays have steps and uneven surfaces. The proximity of the Vieux-Moulin Swimming Pool, 3.1 kilometers away, offers a heated and supervised alternative for those seeking more controlled swimming conditions.
Ouchy derives its name from the Latin 'Aulcetum', meaning 'marshy place', although the site was gradually drained and developed from the Middle Ages onwards. The port became famous in 1907 as the site for the signing of the Treaty of Ouchy, ending the Italo-Turkish War, an event that profoundly marked European diplomatic history. Today, although swimming is not its main activity, Lausanne residents continue to dive in during hot summer days, perpetuating an informal practice dating back to the 1950s, when the port was less urbanized and Lake Geneva less polluted.
