Spiaggia Libera Licola Mare extends along the Campanian coast, about 25 kilometers west of Naples, in the Bay of Naples. This free beach is part of the Lido di Licola coastline, a coastal area characterized by remnant pine forests and low dunes that testify to a fragile coastal ecology. The shore, shaped by sedimentary deposits from the Tiber River and the gulf currents, has a gentle slope typical of the coasts of southern Campania. The backshore borders private beach establishments and residences, while the Mediterranean opens widely to the south. Unlike the developed lidos that adjoin it—the Key at 900 meters and Lido Nereidi at 1.6 kilometers—this free beach retains access without fees and without standardized facilities. The sand, of medium grain size, receives less dense attendance than its equipped neighbors, making it a quieter swimming area during the summer. The regular bathymetric profile and the absence of massive structures allow for a gradual entry into the water, although the northwest exposure subjects the beach to winter swells. No services are listed in the OSM database: no toilets, showers, or dedicated parking. The beach does not fly the Blue Flag label, and no lifeguards supervise swimming. Access remains free and informal, typical of Naples' free beaches, which implies complete autonomy for the swimmer. The proximity to Naples and the train connection to Licola make it easily accessible for passing visitors.
Licola, whose name derives from the Latin "Licula" (small cove), designates a formerly marshy coastal area, drained and reforested with pines during the 20th century. This free beach represents a vestige of public access to the Campanian coastline, before the massive privatization of the 1960s-1980s. According to local memories, the Licola pine forest served as a refuge for Neapolitan families during the bombings of World War II, and the area remains etched in collective memory as a popular relaxation spot, far from the upscale establishments of Posillipo. Today, it embodies the resistance of free beaches against the commodification of the coastline.
