Ayancık Sahili

Ayancık Sahili extends along the Black Sea coast, in the Bithynia region (Bolu), north of central Turkey. Located about 200 km east of Istanbul, this beach is part of the winding Black Sea coastline, characterized by wooded cliffs plunging towards generally calm, gray waters. The shore here benefits from direct exposure to the north winds, typical of this section of the coast where pine and chestnut forests descend to the beach's edge. The beach itself remains relatively untouched by the massive tourist developments that mark other sectors of the Turkish Black Sea. Ayancık Köyü Plajı is located 1.2 km to the east, while Ali Köyü Plajı extends 5.7 km to the west, offering nearby but distinct alternatives. The character of Ayancık Sahili remains that of a modest coastal beach, without spectacular infrastructure, where direct contact with coastal nature takes precedence over urban comfort. Sand and pebbles alternate according to seasonal deposits, and the hinterland landscape retains its rural aspect, dominated by fishing villages and small orchards. No Blue Flag label certifies this beach, and no official supervision is provided. Access remains free and without standardized facilities. Visitors should anticipate an experience devoid of showers, public toilets, or catering services directly by the sea, a common characteristic of less developed beaches on this coastline.

About this spot

Ayancık derives its name from the Turkish 'ayan' (notable, dignitary) and 'cık' (diminutive suffix), evoking a small historical settlement linked to Ottoman local elites. This region of the Black Sea, once a commercial hub between Anatolia and the Balkans, has retained its role as a minor port for coastal fishing. The surrounding cliffs, formed of sedimentary rocks dating back to the Cretaceous period, create a distinctive geological landscape. During autumn storms, the coastline reveals marine fossils and mineral formations that have attracted local collectors for generations.
