Sunken Meadow Beach

Sunken Meadow Beach stretches along the Atlantic coast of Massachusetts, in the Cape Cod region, about 4.5 km south of Marconi Beach and 5 km west of Nauset Light Beach in Eastham. This stretch of coastline, shaped by glacial deposits that characterize the entire peninsula, borders the Atlantic Ocean with the typical geology of New England beaches: fine sand cliffs interspersed with ancient rock formations. The surrounding coastal landscape alternates between exposed sandy areas and more sheltered sections, creating a mosaic of distinct coastal environments over a few kilometers. The beach itself consists of a strip of fine sand, characteristic of the southern Cape Cod beaches. Unlike Nauset Light Beach, which is wider and more crowded, Sunken Meadow offers a less densely populated experience. The site has direct exposure to the Atlantic Ocean, making it a place subject to Atlantic swell conditions and significant tides in the region. Access to the shore is gradual, typical of the beaches on this coast, with a gentle slope allowing for a regular entry into the water. No swimming supervision services are provided on-site. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not arranged. The beach does not have Blue Flag certification. Visitors should bring their own equipment and be self-sufficient regarding water safety. The proximity of Lecount Hollow Beach and Maguire Landing Beach, both 6.4 km away, offers alternatives just a short drive for those seeking additional services.

About this spot

The name "Sunken Meadow" evokes the low meadows that once characterized this area before being gradually submerged by rising sea levels, a continuous geomorphological phenomenon along the Massachusetts coast. Cape Cod, formed about 20,000 years ago by the terminal deposits of the last glaciation, has experienced accelerated coastal erosion since the 19th century. The beaches in this region have long served as landmarks for whalers and fishermen from New England; Marconi, located nearby, is named after Guglielmo Marconi, who established his first transatlantic transmission station here in 1903, transforming this stretch of coastline into a symbolic site of technological innovation in the early 20th century.
