Spiaggia Lido Valtravaglia

Spiaggia Lido Valtravaglia occupies the Swiss shore of Lake Maggiore, about 100 kilometers north of Milan and just a few kilometers from the Italian-Swiss border. This section of the lake, one of the largest in the Alpine region, extends here between wooded slopes that gradually plunge towards the water. The coastline of this area is characterized by a succession of small beaches and coves, where rocky shores alternate with deposits of pebbles and fine sand accumulated by lake currents. The beach consists entirely of rounded pebbles, typical of Alpine shores shaped by glacial erosion. Backed by low Mediterranean vegetation and discreet residential buildings, it is part of a highly fragmented coastal fabric. Just 100 meters away is Spiaggia Rivazzola, while Plage CH is only 200 meters away; these three beaches form an almost uninterrupted continuum. The atmosphere remains that of a local seaside resort, without imposing tourist infrastructure, where swimmers come for direct access to the water rather than a standardized resort experience. The lake water, relatively clear in summer, offers a pleasant temperature from June to September. Public access is guaranteed, although the beach does not have the Blue Flag label. No official supervision is provided on site. Wheelchair users will encounter access difficulties. The immediate proximity to the two other neighboring beaches makes it an area where one can easily explore several boarding points during the same day.

About this spot

Valtravaglia, whose name evokes the valley ('valle') descending to the lake from the Alps, is a Swiss municipality in Ticino founded in the Middle Ages as an agricultural settlement. Lake Maggiore, known in Italian as Verbano, has long served as a trade route and natural border between Switzerland and Italy. The pebble beaches of this shore bear witness to the action of Quaternary glaciers that carved this deep basin. Since the 1960s, the lido has developed as a recreational area for local residents and tourists transiting to the Alps, away from the mass tourism that characterizes the Italian shores of the lake.
