Ses Vaques

Ses Vaques is located on the north coast of Menorca, Spain, in the Balearic Islands region. The coastline of this part of the island is characterized by a succession of small coves and rocky beaches, shaped by limestone cliffs that plunge directly into the Mediterranean. Access to this coast remains relatively preserved, far from major tourist routes, which gives the region a wilder and more authentic atmosphere. Unlike its immediate neighbors, Ses Vaques is distinguished by its entirely rocky surface, devoid of sand. Only 400 meters away is Platja de s'Eixugador, while Platja de la Punta des Falcó extends 1.6 kilometers. This mineral composition makes it a unique site: the smooth rocks, worn by the waves, offer an unusual swimming experience, where entering the water requires caution and appropriate footwear. The landscape remains raw, without amenities, and the crystal-clear water reveals the rocky seabeds. Exposure to north winds makes conditions variable depending on the season. Ses Vaques has no tourist infrastructure: no toilets, parking, or showers. The beach is not Blue Flag classified, and no lifeguard service is provided. Access is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. This deliberate lack of development preserves the natural character of the site, attracting mainly visitors seeking less conventional coastal experiences.

About this spot

The name "Ses Vaques" derives from Catalan and refers to the local fauna, likely marine cows or seagrass beds that dot the Menorcan seabeds. Menorca, although overshadowed by Mallorca and Ibiza in the tourist imagination, remains the geological laboratory of the Balearic Islands: its rocky coasts bear witness to a complex geomorphological history, with limestone formations dating back to the Tertiary period. Bare rock beaches like this one are remnants of this ancient geology, rarely modified by sandy erosion. Locally, these rocky coves have attracted divers and naturalists since the 1970s, when Menorca began to be rediscovered as a quieter alternative to the overexploited neighboring islands.
