Plage de la Bouillabaisse

Located on the Var coast, about 1.4 km east of Gassin, Plage de la Bouillabaisse is part of the string of small coves that characterize the Gulf of Saint-Tropez coastline. This stretch of Mediterranean coast, facing due south, benefits from the natural protection of the Esterel massifs in the background. The turquoise, shallow summer waters contrast with the darker hues of the visible rocky bottoms at shallow depths, typical of this region where limestone and crystalline rocks meet. The beach itself remains modest, without structured facilities or official supervision. In the immediate vicinity, Plage de la Moune (1.4 km away) offers a slightly more developed alternative, while Plage de la Glaye (1.5 km) and Plage de la Fontanette (1.7 km) complete this coastal string. Access remains basic, typical of small Varois shores where the absence of large-scale developments preserves a certain authenticity. The site is not Blue Flag certified and lacks accessibility facilities for people with reduced mobility. The status of this beach reflects a Mediterranean coastal philosophy where informality prevails over institutionalization. No dining services are reported, and parking depends on the limited possibilities in the area. This configuration makes it a place frequented by locals rather than organized tourists, where visitors must anticipate their essential needs before going there.

About this spot

The name "Bouillabaisse" first evokes the emblematic Provençal soup, but its application to this beach likely refers to the churning of shallow, turbulent waters during rough sea conditions—a common phenomenon in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez during Mistral winds. The region, historically linked to fishing communities and salt workers, retains this memory in the toponymy of its coves. Gassin, a hilltop village overlooking the area, long served as a refuge for coastal populations fleeing Barbary raids in the 16th century, explaining why beaches remained secondary in local territorial organization.
