Playa de los Genoveses

Playa de los Genoveses stretches along the Algerian Mediterranean coast, near the eastern Sahel coastline, in a region where the coastal Atlas Mountains plunge towards the sea. Located in the province of Almería, Spain, at coordinates (36.744°N, 2.1204°O), this beach is part of a chain of coves and bays that characterize this stretch of the Andalusian coast. The shore here features a succession of small fine sand beaches and limestone rock formations typical of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, of which it is one of the most accessible entrances. The beach itself offers an atmosphere of relative tranquility compared to its immediate neighbors. Cala del Príncipe, 0.8 km away, attracts more visitors seeking complete isolation, while Cala de los Amarillos, 0.9 km away, remains even less frequented. Los Genoveses stands out for its balance: a strip of golden sand backed by ochre and gray cliffs, with crystal-clear waters of intense blue-green. Access is via a well-marked coastal path, and the bay's natural configuration offers protection from the prevailing northerly winds. No formal infrastructure equips the site: no supervision, no designated parking, no amenities. The beach does not benefit from the Blue Flag label. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is nonexistent. This deliberate lack of facilities is part of the conservation philosophy of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, which prioritizes the preservation of coastal ecosystems over standardized tourist development.

About this spot

The name 'Genoveses' refers to the medieval history of the Mediterranean coast, marked by the incursions of Genoese galleys and trade between the Italian maritime republics and the Iberian kingdoms. This beach, like several others in Cabo de Gata, bears the trace of these ancient contacts. Geologically, the site belongs to the Miocene volcanic zone, where mineral formations give the cliffs their characteristic hues. During low tides in summer, the rocky pools fill with crystal-clear water, revealing small marine ecosystems explored by snorkelers since the 1980s, when the natural park began to attract nature lovers seeking preserved environments.
