Playa del Lance Nuevo
Playa del Lance Nuevo stretches along the Mediterranean coast of Seville province in eastern Andalusia, a few kilometers southwest of Motril and approximately 80 km east of Málaga. This section of the Granada littoral is characterized by a succession of small coves and fine sandy beaches backed by ochre and gray limestone cliffs that plunge directly into the sea. The water, a deep blue and generally clear, offers pleasant temperatures in summer, though subject to Mediterranean currents. The beach itself features golden, fine sand typical of this tropical coast. Unlike Playa del Cantal, located just 800 meters to the east and more frequented, Lance Nuevo maintains a quieter character. At 900 meters to the west lies Playa Cueva del Lobo, renowned for its spectacular geological formations. The shore stretches for several hundred meters before narrowing at the ends, where rocks begin to fragment the sand. Access is via a coastal path or local road, and the atmosphere remains that of a semi-urban beach, neither entirely wild nor fully developed. A lifeguard station is present on the beach. Access for people with reduced mobility is not provided. The beach does not hold Blue Flag certification. Swimming conditions are generally good, with a gradual slope suitable for most swimmers.
About this spot
The name "Lance Nuevo"—literally "new lance"—refers to ancient fishing techniques practiced on this coast since medieval times, when fishermen used lances and nets to catch pelagic species. This region of the Granada littoral was long a center of artisanal fishing before twentieth-century tourism development. The cliffs dominating the beach are composed of Jurassic limestone, witnesses to the ancient Tethys Sea. Today, traditional fishing boats still regularly pass before the shore, recalling the maritime heritage of the place.
