Cala Castillo

Cala Castillo extends along the Algerian Mediterranean coastline, in the immediate vicinity of the Andalusian coast. Located at coordinates 36.94°N / 1.90°W, this small cove is part of a string of coves that punctuate this section of the North Algerian shore, characterized by limestone cliffs and steep rock formations. The coastal landscape alternates between sandy stretches and mineral outcrops, typical of this transition zone between Mediterranean influences and the Tellian massifs. The cove is distinguished by its intimate character within a sector densely populated with seaside alternatives. 1.3 km to the west are Los Muertos Beach and Playa de los Muertos, two beaches that share a similar exposure but attract distinct visitor flows. Cala Arena, 1.5 km away, offers a comparable geomorphological configuration with its own rock formations. Upon arrival, visitors discover a confined bay, where rock dominates and access to the water is via narrow passages between boulders. The atmosphere remains that of a little-developed Mediterranean coastal cove, where the mineral nature prevails over infrastructure. No standardized tourist facilities are reported on site. The beach does not benefit from the Blue Flag label and offers neither supervision nor facilities for accessibility for people with reduced mobility. This configuration corresponds to the characteristics of small natural coves on the Algerian coast, where access remains free but visitors must anticipate the absence of basic services.

About this spot

The name 'Castillo' evokes the coastal fortifications that once dotted this part of the Algerian Mediterranean coast, built during the Ottoman era to defend the territory against corsair incursions and Spanish expeditions. These watchtowers and small forts, whose remains still exist in places, have given their name to several coves in the region. Cala Castillo thus carries the memory of this defensive architecture, although the ruins themselves have largely disappeared. The cove remains a landmark for local sailors and snorkeling enthusiasts, who appreciate its clear waters and underwater geological formations.
