Sunset Beach Club Palinuro

Sunset Beach Club Palinuro extends along the Tyrrhenian coast of Campania, in the province of Salerno, about 150 kilometers south of Naples. The coastline of this region, dominated by the limestone cliffs of the Palinuro Peninsula, alternates between rocky coves and fine sandy beaches. The coast here drops rapidly into deep waters, a typical characteristic of the Gulf of Policastro, where rocky seabeds and seagrass meadows testify to a preserved coastal ecology despite tourist traffic. The site is distinguished by its access via a beach establishment, which differentiates it from neighboring free beaches like Plage IT-S 0.7 km away or Lido La Vela 1.3 km away. The atmosphere remains that of an authentic Mediterranean bay: the turquoise, translucent water in summer reveals rocks and seagrass beds several meters deep. The cliffs bordering the cove create natural intimacy, while the west-facing orientation indeed offers remarkable sunsets over the Mediterranean, thus justifying the establishment's name. Access is exclusively through the private club. No public supervision service is provided, and accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. The site does not have the Blue Flag label. Visitors must pay an access fee to the establishment to use the facilities and equipment available on site.

About this spot

Palinuro derives its name from Greek mythology: Palinurus was the legendary helmsman of Aeneas who, according to Virgil, perished in these waters while trying to reach the coast. The rocky promontory overlooking the region has borne the weight of this maritime history since antiquity. The coastline of Palinuro, with its sea caves and spectacular geological formations, has long served as a landmark for sailors. The Sunset Beach Club establishment represents a modern evolution of Campanian seaside tourism: the privatization of coastal access, although controversial, reflects the tensions between preservation and tourist development that have characterized this stretch of Tyrrhenian coastline since the 1980s.
