Cala d'Oques stretches along the coast of Castellón, in the Valencian Community, about 50 km north of Castelló de la Plana. This portion of the Mediterranean coast is characterized by a succession of small coves and fine sandy beaches, framed by modest limestone cliffs and sparse Mediterranean vegetation. The hinterland, sparsely populated, retains the rural character of the Maestrazgo's inland areas. The beach itself offers a strip of compact golden sand, about a hundred meters deep, exposed to northeasterly winds. Unlike Caleta de l'alguer, located just 0.4 km away and often more frequented, Cala d'Oques remains quieter and less developed. Cala Justell, 2.8 km away, offers a similar but more enclosed configuration. The water entry is gradual, without marked sandbars, and rocky bottoms emerge in places along the beach. Access is via a small coastal path without formal parking nearby. No service infrastructure is located there: no toilets, showers, or restaurant on site. The beach is not Blue Flag certified and has no supervision. The lack of facilities for people with reduced mobility makes it difficult to access for visitors with disabilities.
The toponym 'Oques' likely derives from the Catalan 'oca' (goose), an animal once common in the coastal wetlands of the region. This cove is part of the vast network of calas that dot the Costa del Azahar, formed by the differential erosion of Jurassic and Cretaceous limestones. During winter storms, local fishermen sought refuge there with their boats, hence its ancient strategic importance. Today, it remains a stopover for coastal hikers following the GR 92 trail, the great Spanish Mediterranean route.
