Spiaggia Ex Porto Antico Selinunte

The Spiaggia Ex Porto Antico Selinunte extends along the southwest coast of Sicily, in Sicily (Trapani region), a few kilometers east of Castelvetrano and not far from the major archaeological remains of Selinunte. This portion of the Ionian coastline offers a succession of sandy beaches that characterize the Gulf of Gela, where the Mediterranean meets a low, gently sloping coast. The shore, shaped by millennia of alluvial deposits, stretches gently towards the turquoise waters. Fine, light sand makes up this entire beach, which is distinguished by its less developed character than its immediate neighbors. 0.7 km to the northwest is Lido Mokambo, a more structured establishment with tourist services, while 1.1 km to the east, Playa Lido Zabbara offers a similar service. Unlike these two commercial lidos, Ex Porto Antico retains a more sober atmosphere, with direct access to a relatively preserved coastal strip. The southeast exposure exposes the beach to moderate Mediterranean swells, creating generally calm swimming conditions in summer. The landscape remains largely open, with no notable cliffs or rock formations. No official facilities are reported on site: no toilets, no designated parking, no showers. The beach does not benefit from the Blue Flag label and is not supervised. Access for people with reduced mobility is not provided. This configuration makes it an option for visitors seeking a less structured approach to the Sicilian coast, in immediate proximity to the excavations of Selinunte.

About this spot

The name "Ex Porto Antico" directly refers to the ancient history of Selinunte, a Greek colony founded in the 7th century BC that became one of Sicily's most prosperous cities. The ancient port, once vital for trade and defense, gradually lost its importance after Carthaginian and Roman destructions. The current beach rests on sediments accumulated over centuries, partially burying the port remains under sand. Archaeologists who explored this sector during the 20th century found fragments of Greek pottery and stone anchors, evidence of the intense maritime activity of the past. Today, the site remains a point of passage between the seaside modernity of the surrounding lidos and the vanished grandeur of the ancient city.
