Praia do Lastre

Praia do Lastre stretches along the northwest coast of Galicia, Spain, in the Camariñas region, about 70 kilometers northwest of Coruña. This part of the Atlantic coast is characterized by a succession of coves and rocky inlets, where granite cliffs plunge into cold and often rough waters. The bay offers a typically Galician physiognomy: rounded rocks shaped by erosion, ancient geological formations, and sparse coastal vegetation adapted to salt spray. The beach itself remains intimate, nestled between Camelle (only 200 meters away) and Arou (1.4 kilometers to the southeast), two other small beaches dotting this indented coast. Unlike the vast sandy expanses of southern Galicia, this area favors authenticity: access remains discreet, tourist facilities are absent, and the atmosphere retains the austerity characteristic of the north Iberian Atlantic coast. At low tide, rocky expanses are revealed, showing natural pools and puddles where marine life can be easily observed. The site has no formal facilities: no designated parking, no toilets, no supervision. The absence of Blue Flag certification reflects this preservation philosophy. Access is via coastal paths from nearby villages, maintaining moderate visitor numbers and preserving the wild character of the place. Visitors should plan their visit according to the tides and the often-changing weather conditions of this Atlantic-exposed area.

About this spot

The name 'Lastre' evokes in Galician the ballast of ships, recalling the historical importance of maritime transport on this coast. This region, known as Costa da Morte (Coast of Death), owes its reputation to frequent shipwrecks caused by submerged rocks and Atlantic storms. Praia do Lastre embodies this hostile yet captivating geography: local fishermen know every reef, every current. In the 19th century, shipwrecks occurred regularly, and coastal populations practiced cargo salvage. Today, this beach remains an anchor for travelers seeking Galician authenticity, far from standardized tourist routes.
