Secline Beach stretches along the north shore of Lake Tahoe, on the California-Nevada border in the Sierra Nevada. Located about 0.4 km west of Kings Beach, this stretch of coastline is part of a group of beaches that dot the 191 km of coastline of North America's largest alpine lake. The lake, nestled at an altitude of 1,897 meters, offers crystal-clear waters renowned for their exceptional transparency, while the rocky, wooded shores of the region create a characteristic mountain setting.
Lake Tahoe, whose name comes from the Washoe term 'da ow' (big lake), was formed about two million years ago during the collapse of a tectonic graben. The north shore, where Kings Beach and Secline Beach are strung out within a few hundred meters of each other, constitutes the most densely developed area of the lake, transformed over the 20th century into a major tourist destination. The immediate proximity of these two beaches—separated by less than half a kilometer—reflects the history of urban development in the region, where small bays were gradually integrated into regional recreational infrastructure.
