Kilyos Plajı

Kilyos Plajı stretches along the Black Sea coast, in the northern Bosphorus region, about 30 kilometers north of Istanbul. This section of the Turkish coast is characterized by a succession of fine sandy beaches bordered by pine forests and small seaside establishments, where the coast gradually rises towards the interior. The Black Sea, less agitated here than in its western sectors, offers generally calm and temperate waters during the summer season. The beach itself is distinguished by its accessibility from the coastal road and its immediate proximity to Bamboo Beach (200 meters), a popular water sports facility for Istanbul residents. Unlike the more urbanized beaches of the strait, Kilyos Plajı retains a relatively relaxed atmosphere, with gray-beige sand typical of this region and a gentle slope facilitating entry into the water. The atmosphere remains family-friendly on weekdays, livelier on weekends when Istanbul residents escape the capital. The site has no official supervision or environmental label. Access remains free and direct from the coastal road, although the infrastructure is minimal. Visitors must provide their own equipment and services, with restaurants and shops concentrated more around the neighboring Bamboo Beach.

About this spot

Kilyos derives its name from the ancient Greek 'Kios,' a colony established on this coast during Antiquity. The area, long remaining a simple fishing village, gradually transformed into a seaside resort starting in the 1970s with the improvement of access roads from Istanbul. Today, Kilyos represents the northern starting point of the Bosphorus beaches, marking the boundary where the wild coast gives way to tourist facilities. Local fishermen continue to use the small adjacent harbors at dawn, while sailboats anchored in the bays attest to the sector's nautical importance.
