Playa de Mendía

Playa de Mendía stretches along the coast of Asturias, in northern Spain, in the immediate vicinity of Playas de Mendia (0.1 km) and Playa de Cuevas Coloradas (0.2 km). This part of the Cantabrian coastline is characterized by a succession of small coves and pocket beaches, framed by low cliffs and rock formations typical of this rugged coastal region. The area, densely dotted with beaches—Playa El Vivero at 0.7 km, Playa de El Regolgueru at 1.2 km—testifies to a fragmented geography where each recess of the shore offers its own refuge. Mendía presents the characteristics of a sparsely developed beach, remaining away from the mass tourism that focuses its efforts on more accessible seaside resorts. The absence of official supervision and the non-existence of Blue Flag certification maintain it in a form of coastal authenticity, where visitors contend with the natural conditions of the Asturian coast. The site remains devoid of formal facilities, which limits access to informed swimmers capable of managing a swim in often cold Atlantic waters subject to coastal currents. Access for people with disabilities is not provided. No restaurant, parking, or shower services are reported on site. The beach remains a poorly structured natural space, where the tide and weather conditions are the only determining factors for beach activities.

About this spot

Mendía derives its name from the Basque "mendi" (mountain), a direct reference to the reliefs dominating this segment of the Asturian coastline. The north coast of Spain, shaped by glacial erosion and marine cycles, features this succession of small beaches that local inhabitants have long used for artisanal fishing. Unlike the southern beaches that have become standardized tourist destinations, this region has retained a certain discretion, where beaches remain places for daily practice rather than spectacle. Asturian fishermen continue to frequent these coves to access coastal fishing grounds, perpetuating a maritime tradition centuries old.
