Bain des Dames

Le Bain des Dames stretches along the northern shore of Lake Geneva, in the Montreux region, in French-speaking Switzerland. Located about 1.5 km east of Maladaire and 3.3 km west of Bains de la Crottaz, this section of the Vaudois coast features a succession of small beaches and developed swimming areas, characterized by gentle slopes and views of the Alps that close the southern horizon. The lake, wide and deep here, remains relatively calm due to the northeast exposure, protected from prevailing winds. The site consists of a pebble beach, typical of Lake Geneva in this region. Unlike Maladaire, immediately adjacent, which offers a more urban and structured atmosphere, Le Bain des Dames retains a more discreet and less frequented character. The shore, bordered by a few residences and green spaces, slopes gradually towards the water. The smooth, rounded pebbles, smoothed by centuries of surf, facilitate access to the water, although swimming requires some caution due to the nature of the bottom. The site has no swimming supervision. Access is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. No specific facilities (toilets, showers, parking) are reported in the available data. Le Bain des Dames does not have the Blue Flag status.

About this spot

The name 'Bain des Dames' (Ladies' Bath) evokes a bygone era when women of Lake Geneva's bourgeoisie reserved distinct swimming areas for themselves, a practice common in the 19th century in Alpine seaside resorts. This social segregation, now disappeared, has left its mark on local toponymy. The site remains a testament to this history of lakeside leisure, frequented since then by generations of residents and visitors. Although without major tourist infrastructure, it remains an anchor point for swimmers seeking a less formal approach to Lake Geneva.
