Bo Phut stretches along the northeast coast of Koh Samui, in the Gulf of Thailand, about 12 kilometers from the island's main port. This stretch of coastline is characterized by its sheltered orientation, facing the open sea and the small islands of the gulf, away from coastal areas most exposed to monsoon winds. The shore, with fine golden sand, is part of a shallow bay that gradually extends seaward, typical of the beaches in northeastern Koh Samui. The Bo Phut area remains less developed than its immediate neighbors. Haad Bophut, its immediate extension, is 500 meters away, while W Beach, 2 kilometers to the southwest, marks a transition to more commercialized areas. Mae Nam, 2.8 kilometers away, offers a similar but slightly more developed atmosphere. The fine white sand forms a gently sloping beach, ideal for a gradual entry into the turquoise waters of the gulf. The general ambiance is that of a quiet bay, without the massive infrastructure of the island's saturated tourist areas. The site does not have a Blue Flag label and offers no official supervision. No major facilities (toilets, showers, parking) are documented on site. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. Bo Phut remains a free-access beach, without standardized amenities, where swimming is entirely at the individual's initiative.
About this spot
Bo Phut derives its name from the Thai term "bo" (ป่า), meaning forest or wooded area, and "phut" (พุฒ), referring to a mound or elevation. Historically, this bay in northeastern Koh Samui served as a anchorage for local fishermen for a long time before the massive arrival of tourism in the 1980s-1990s. Unlike Chaweng or Lamai, Bo Phut has retained part of its village character, with a small, still active fishing port and traditional fishermen's houses set back from the beach. Elderly residents say that the area once hosted Muslim fishing families from Malaysia, whose influence persists in the local coastal architecture and the small family restaurants scattered near the shore.
