Platja del Cavaió

Located on the Maresme coast in Northern Catalonia, about 40 kilometers northeast of Barcelona, Platja del Cavaió is part of this Mediterranean coastline where small rocky coves alternate with fine sandy beaches. The Catalan shore here has a relatively preserved profile, with backshores lined with umbrella pines and discreet villas that characterize this portion of the Costa del Maresme. The turquoise, shallow water in summer contrasts with the limestone cliffs that close the horizon to the north. This modest-sized beach is distinguished by its quiet character, far from the hustle and bustle of neighboring seaside resorts like Primera Platja (1.2 km) or Platja de Canet (1.5 km). Access is via a coastal path that crosses typical Mediterranean vegetation, gradually revealing a strip of gray-beige sand, gently sloping. The southwest exposure makes it a sheltered spot from north winds, particularly pleasant during seasonal transitions. The site remains sparsely developed, retaining an intimate atmosphere sought by swimmers looking to escape standardized tourist circuits. No permanent facilities are reported on site: no official supervision, no showers, or toilets. The beach does not have the Blue Flag label. Road access is via the local Maresme roads, from the villages of Canet de Mar or Arenys de Mar. The lack of facilities makes it a swimming spot for self-sufficient visitors, accustomed to summer self-sufficiency.

About this spot

The name Cavaió refers to ancient Catalan terminology designating small coastal cavities or caves, common on this stretch of Maresme where marine erosion has carved hollows into the Miocene limestone. The region, historically dedicated to fishing and table grape cultivation, underwent a gradual transformation into a seaside destination starting in the 1960s. Even today, fishing boats regularly moor in neighboring coves, recalling that this coastline remains primarily a working space before being a leisure area. Local fishermen from the area recount that winter storms regularly uncover Roman mosaic tesserae in the sand, remnants of the port structures that once lined this coast.
