Školjić is located on the Croatian Adriatic coast, in the Istria region, about 35 kilometers south of Rovinj. This part of the coastline is characterized by a succession of small coves and intimate beaches, alternating between limestone rocks and strips of fine sand, typical of this indented coast. The Adriatic here displays crystalline hues, varying from turquoise to deep blue depending on the depth and the angle of the sun. The beach itself remains discreet, without intrusive tourist facilities. It is part of a chain of small coastal shores: Podlokva is only 0.8 km away, while Runke is 1.4 km away. Unlike the latter, often frequented by local residents and passing sailboats, Školjić retains a more secluded character, attracting mainly swimmers seeking tranquility. Access is via well-marked coastal paths, gradually revealing the bay with calm, shallow waters near the shore. No supervision service is provided, and accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. The site does not have Blue Flag certification. Visitors should bring their own equipment and supplies before heading there, as no commercial facilities are located there. This lack of amenities is precisely its appeal to travelers who appreciate the authenticity of the Adriatic coast.
The name Školjić derives from the Croatian 'školjka', meaning seashell or mollusk—a direct reference to the rich seabed of this area, historically exploited by local fishermen. This Istrian coast, shaped by karstic erosion, bears traces of millennia of human occupation, from the Romans to the Venetians. During the restoration of coastal paths in the 1990s, Roman pottery was discovered near Runke, suggesting that these small coves already served as anchorages for ancient ships. Today, Školjić remains a living testament to this preserved geography, where generations of local fishermen continue to frequent the same waters as their ancestors.
