Platja del Saldonar

Platja del Saldonar extends along the coast of Castellón, in the Valencian Community, a few kilometers south of Benicàssim. This section of the Spanish Mediterranean coast is characterized by a succession of small coves and fine sandy beaches, framed by a hinterland of umbrella pines and limestone formations. The shore, facing southeast, directly receives Mediterranean swells and benefits from constant light exposure throughout the day. The beach itself remains relatively discreet compared to its immediate neighbors: just 1 km away is Playa del Riu Cervol, more frequented, while Cala del Pinar, 1.3 km away, attracts a more varied clientele. Saldonar retains a more refined character, without seasonal overcrowding, where the fine sand gradually extends towards shallow rocky bottoms. Visitors discover an authentic Mediterranean atmosphere, far from massive facilities, with direct access from coastal paths and an unobstructed view of the open sea. No permanent facilities are reported on site. Swimming is done without official supervision. Access remains free and direct, although the lack of dedicated parking implies parking on adjacent roads. The beach does not have the Blue Flag certification. Dogs are not mentioned in the available data.

About this spot

The name Saldonar evokes the old Valencian term 'saldar,' meaning 'to salt' or 'to preserve,' referring to the ancient salt marshes that once lined this coast. The region of Castellón, historically dominated by coastal agriculture and fishing, retains in its micro-toponyms the memory of medieval coastal activities. From the 19th century onwards, mule tracks connecting Benicàssim to inland villages passed through these coves; smugglers found refuge there. Today, hikers on the coastal path still discover remnants of these old routes, while local fishermen cast their nets as their predecessors did.
