Praia de Canelas

Praia de Canelas extends along the Galician coast, in northwestern Spain, about 2 kilometers from Praia de Compostela and 2.1 kilometers from Praia da Laxe. Located in the Galicia region (ES-N), this beach is part of a series of small coves that dot the Atlantic coastline of the Ría de Muros y Noia. The coast here is characterized by an alternation of small rocky capes and sandy inlets, typical of this region where the ocean has shaped a fragmented and intimate coastal landscape. Canelas remains a sparsely populated beach, far from the massive developments that characterize some Galician shores. Unlike its immediate neighbors, it retains a more secluded character, attracting mainly visitors who explore this succession of small beaches on foot. The shore here opens directly onto the Atlantic, exposed to western swells, making it a popular spot in moderate oceanic conditions. The general atmosphere remains that of an authentic Galician coast, where geography takes precedence over tourist infrastructure. Access to Canelas has no reported facilities: no dedicated parking, no public toilets, or showers. The beach is not classified as Blue Flag and has no supervision. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. This minimalist configuration makes it a place where only self-sufficient and well-prepared visitors will find their enjoyment, particularly during the summer months or outside peak tourist periods.

About this spot

The name Canelas evokes 'cinnamon' in Galician—a likely reference to the golden hue of the sand or an old coastal grocery store. This stretch of Galician coastline has long served as a passage for fishermen and merchants sailing along the Ría. Even today, the small beaches in this area retain the imprint of this discreet maritime history: a few traditional boats are sometimes found beached there, remnants of a local economy based on artisanal fishing and shellfish harvesting. The beach itself remains a crossroads between the rural life of the Galician interior and the rhythms of the Atlantic Ocean.
