Playa de Las Maretas

Located in the Canary Islands, Spain, Playa de Las Maretas occupies the northeastern coast of Lanzarote, immediately near the small coastal hamlet of the same name. This section of the Atlantic coast is characterized by black basalt cliffs plunging towards the ocean, typical of the volcanic geology of the archipelago. The shore, exposed to North Atlantic swells, is part of a fragmented coastal area where modest-sized coves and beaches alternate, far from the seaside concentrations in the south of the island. The beach itself remains a largely undeveloped natural formation, backed by rock formations that structure access. 100 meters away is the small beach of Las Maretas, while Playa de La Jaca extends 2.9 kilometers to the west. The site retains the raw character of Lanzarote's northern coasts: absence of paved promenades, sparse vegetation adapted to the arid climate, and an atmosphere of relative isolation sought by visitors fleeing conventional seaside resorts. Access remains rudimentary, without standardized tourist facilities. No supervision service is provided, and accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. The site does not have the Blue Flag label. Visitors must bring their personal equipment and anticipate the changing weather conditions of this exposed Atlantic facade.

About this spot

The name 'Las Maretas' refers to the small natural pools (maretas in Spanish) that tides carve into the volcanic rocks of Lanzarote's northern coast. This coastal area, formed by the eruptions of Timanfaya centuries ago, remains sparsely populated, unlike the southern tourist developments. Local fishermen have long frequented these coves for access to fish-rich waters, before coastal hiking tourism gradually rediscovered these authentic shores in the 1990s.
