Härlanda tjärns badplats

Härlanda tjärn is a small reservoir located in Västra Götaland, central Sweden, about 15 kilometers southwest of Gothenburg. The site is part of the typical glacial lake landscape of southern Sweden, where geological formations inherited from the last ice age shape a dense network of water bodies. The region, dotted with coniferous forests and scattered residential areas, offers a succession of small lakes developed for summer swimming. The beach itself borders a shallow lake with clear waters, with direct access on fine sand. Unlike Delsjöbadet, located 2.6 kilometers away and known for its more developed facilities, or Bergsjöbadet, 4.4 kilometers away, Härlanda tjärn retains a more discreet and less frequented character. The site remains a local, close-by destination, without major tourist infrastructure, where Swedish families come to swim during the summer months. The atmosphere remains that of a neighborhood swim, far from mass circuits. No surveillance service is provided on site. Access is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. The site does not benefit from the Blue Flag label. Visitors should bring their own equipment and follow local water safety rules, which are particularly important in Sweden where the waters remain cool even in summer.

About this spot

Härlanda, whose compound name refers to classic Swedish toponymy ("härlanda" literally meaning "residence place"), designates a residential district of Gothenburg whose lake bears the name. This small reservoir, formed during the retreat of glaciers over 10,000 years ago, is part of the complex hydrographic system of Västra Götaland. Like many Swedish lakes, Härlanda tjärn was gradually developed for swimming during the 20th century, reflecting the Swedish tradition of democratizing access to aquatic leisure spaces. Local swimmers have frequented it since the 1950s, especially during the short but intense summer seasons.
