Büyük Çakıl Plajı stretches along the Turkish Mediterranean coast, in the Lycia region, near Kaş in the Eastern Mediterranean. This stretch of coastline belongs to one of Anatolia's steepest coastal areas, where the Taurus Mountains plunge directly into a deep blue sea. The bay hosting the beach is part of a landscape of limestone cliffs and coastal pine forests, characteristic of the rugged terrain dominating this region. The beach consists entirely of rounded pebbles, typical of Mediterranean rocky shores. Unlike Küçük Çakıl Plajı, located 0.9 km away and narrower, or Derya Beach, also 0.9 km away with a more accessible profile, Büyük Çakıl Plajı offers a more generous expanse of pebbles that gradually descend towards the clear waters. Direct exposure to the open sea makes it a site exposed to seasonal swells, particularly in winter. Upon arrival, the characteristic sound of pebbles rolling under the waves creates a distinct auditory ambiance, while the crystal-clear water allows for exceptional visibility at depth. The beach benefits from regular surveillance, a reassuring element for swimmers. Access for people with reduced mobility is not adapted, reflecting the natural and undeveloped character of the site. No major facilities—toilets, showers, parking, or restaurants—are reported on site, which keeps the place relatively preserved and requires autonomous preparation from visitors.
The name 'Büyük Çakıl' simply means 'big pebble beach' in Turkish, a descriptive designation reflecting the local geology. This Lycian coast, once the domain of the ancient Lycians, remains marked by spectacular geological formations: the pebbles that make up the beach come from the millennia-long erosion of the limestone cliffs overlooking the sea. The region experienced an intensification of coastal tourism from the 1980s onwards, but some beaches like this one have retained a less developed character than their closer neighbors in Kaş. Divers and swimmers who regularly frequent the site report that the water clarity makes it a popular starting point for exploring the Lycian seabed, particularly the visible ancient rock-cut tombs from the surface.
