Plage de Mousterlin

Located in Finistère, on the south coast of Brittany, Plage de Mousterlin stretches along the bay of Concarneau, immediately adjacent to Fouesnant. This stretch of Atlantic coastline is characterized by the alternation of sandy coves and rocky points typical of the Finistère Cornouaille region. The area, dominated by low cliffs and maritime pines, offers direct exposure to oceanic swells, with particularly marked tides that shape the morphology of the shore daily. The beach itself remains a discreet cove, separated from its neighbor Plage de Kerneuc (0.5 km away) by a slight promontory. Unlike the developed beaches of La Forêt-Fouesnant located 4.7 to 4.9 km to the west, Mousterlin retains a wilder and less urbanized character. Access is via winding coastal paths that descend between granite rocks. At low tide, the exposed sand widens considerably, revealing foreshore areas rich in marine flora and fauna. No major infrastructure equips the site: no dedicated parking, no swimming supervision, no access for people with reduced mobility. The beach does not have the Blue Flag label. Its appeal lies precisely in this lack of development, making it an ideal starting point for coastal hikers exploring the GR34 and a refuge for swimmers seeking privacy.

About this spot

Mousterlin derives its name from the Breton 'Mouster' (monastery) and 'lin' (flax or wild flax), evoking the medieval monastic settlement in the area. This region of Cornouaille has long been the heart of Breton maritime life: coastal fishing, seaweed harvesting, and salt trade structured the local economy. Even today, vestiges of this activity remain in the small neighboring ports of Fouesnant. Shore fishermen regularly frequent this beach during the spring tides to collect shrimp and whelks, perpetuating an ancestral practice that visitors can observe at dawn or late afternoon.
