Plage du Moulin Brûlé

Located on the Atlantic coast of Vendée, about 15 kilometers southwest of Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, Plage du Moulin Brûlé is part of the characteristic coastline of the Île de Ré. This stretch of coast is part of a succession of small fine sandy beaches that dot the northeastern shore of the island, facing the Charentais straits. The shore, protected from offshore swells by the island's geography, benefits from moderate exposure to westerly winds. The beach itself features fine golden sand, typical of the Vendée coastlines. Modest in length, it is part of a string of small, distinct bathing areas: Plage du Boutillon is located just 0.6 kilometers to the northwest, while Plage des Prises extends 1.2 kilometers to the southeast. This immediate proximity to its neighbors creates a fragmented micro-coast atmosphere, where each beach has its own character. Moulin Brûlé remains a quiet stop, without significant infrastructure, offering direct access to sand and water without being overcrowded. The absence of supervision and the Blue Flag label characterize this site, which retains a natural and undeveloped profile. No major amenities (toilets, structured parking, showers) are reported. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. This configuration makes it a discreet swimming spot, preserved from the heavy developments that characterize other areas of the island.

About this spot

The name "Moulin Brûlé" (Burnt Mill) refers to the milling history of the Île de Ré, whose windmills long marked the landscape. Although poorly documented, the toponymy suggests an ancient incident—a fire or destruction—that occurred at one of these emblematic structures. The Île de Ré itself, administratively part of Charente-Maritime, has had an intermittent seaside vocation since the 17th century, intensified in the 20th century. The beach is part of the coastal network where local residents and visitors seeking tranquility find refuge, far from the saturated tourist hubs in the south of the island.
