Plage de Tougues

Plage de Tougues stretches along the southern shore of Lake Geneva, in French-speaking Switzerland, about 25 kilometers east of Geneva. This stretch of the Lake Geneva shoreline is characterized by a succession of small beaches and rocky areas, where the shore follows the contours of a transition zone between lakeside urban areas and the first slopes of the Jura mountains. The lake, fed by the Rhône, offers generally clear but cool waters here, even in summer. The surrounding coast remains sparsely populated, dominated by scattered residential areas and preserved natural spaces, far from tourist seaside resorts. This beach is distinguished by its quiet and less frequented character compared to its immediate neighbors. Just 0.5 kilometers away, Plage d'Hermance offers a similar atmosphere but is slightly more developed, while Plage de la Pointe, 3.2 kilometers to the east, attracts more local visitors. Access to the shore is without major barriers, and the water invites summer swimming from June onwards, with temperatures peaking around 20°C in August. The site retains an authentically regional atmosphere, without excessive commercial facilities or artificial elements. No official supervision is provided on site. Car access is via local roads serving the neighboring municipalities, but no dedicated parking is reported. The absence of the Blue Flag label confirms the informal status of this beach, which benefits from neither standardized facilities nor environmental certifications. This situation makes it a swimming spot reserved for independent visitors familiar with the region.

About this spot

Tougues is a small historic hamlet in the Nyon region, whose name likely derives from the Savoyard dialect 'touge' (small stream). The area, formerly dependent on the lands of the Abbey of Saint-Claude, long retained a rural character despite its proximity to Geneva. In the 19th century, before the arrival of the Lake Geneva railway, these small beaches served as landing points for fishing boats and merchant vessels connecting the lakeside villages. Today, Plage de Tougues remains a vestige of this pre-tourist Lake Geneva, frequented mainly by local residents and swimmers seeking tranquility away from the facilities of large resorts.
