Plage municipale de Menthon Saint-Bernard

Menthon-Saint-Bernard borders Lake Annecy, in Haute-Savoie, about 35 kilometers south of Geneva. This sector of the lake's eastern shore is characterized by gentle, gradual banks, typical of the southeastern shore, where the Pre-Alps are reflected in the crystal-clear waters. Lake Annecy, one of the purest in Europe, offers here a gradual transition between wooded areas and developed swimming areas. The municipal beach is distinguished by its grassy surface, rare on this Alpine lake where sand or pebble beaches generally dominate. This configuration makes it a unique space, less conventional than Plage CH located 1.9 kilometers away or Plage de La Brune at the same distance. The site welcomes swimmers in a tranquil atmosphere, without the crowds of more touristy beach areas. Direct access to the water remains easy, and the gradual depth is suitable for swimmers of all levels. A free parking lot facilitates access, and swimming is supervised during the summer from July 1st to August 31st, from 10 AM to 6 PM. Entry is free. The absence of Blue Flag status does not reflect the water quality of Lake Annecy, renowned for its purity, but rather the municipal and little-commercialized nature of the site.

About this spot

Menthon-Saint-Bernard owes its name to Saint Bernard of Menthon, a 10th-century hermit and patron saint of the Alps, whose abbey founded here radiated over the entire region. The village, perched on the gentle slopes, has overlooked the lake for centuries. The municipal beach itself is part of the long history of development around Lake Annecy, whose shores were gradually equipped for recreation during the 20th century. Unlike the sandy beaches of the western shores, this grassy area retains a more natural character, less transformed by massive earthworks. Local residents come here regularly, far from the tourist circuits concentrated around Annecy-le-Vieux.
