산타 마리아라는 이름은 시칠리아의 많은 해안 지역의 수호성인인 성모 마리아를 의미합니다. 메시나 해협의 이 구간은 고대부터 시칠리아와 칼라브리아 사이의 중요한 통행로였으며, 스트라본과 대 플리니우스는 예측 불가능한 조류를 묘사했습니다. 중세 시대에는 해안 마을들이 해적 습격을 피하기 위해 내륙으로 후퇴했으며, 이것이 해안선이 덜 도시화된 이유입니다. 해변 자체는 오랫동안 지역 어부들의 비공식적인 상륙 지점으로 사용되었으며, 이는 부분적으로 유지되고 있습니다.
