Heceta Beach
ヘセタ・ビーチは、オレゴン州南西部、レーン郡のベーカー・ビーチから約4.6kmの太平洋岸に広がる。この王領海岸の一部は、北カリフォルニアの険しい海岸線によく見られる、そびえ立つ玄武岩の断崖が比較的穏やかな湾を囲んでいるのが特徴だ。数千年にわたる海洋浸食によって形成された海岸線は、この海岸線に沿って見られる岩石層と細かい砂浜の典型的な交互配置を示している。
About this spot
ヘセタという名前は、ヨーロッパ人の入植以前にこの地域に住んでいたコキーユ族やシウスロー族といった先住民に由来する。地質学的には、古代の火山噴火で形成された白亜紀の玄武岩が支配的であり、今日見られる壮大な景観を作り出している。19世紀には、この海岸線は捕鯨船や毛皮商人の拠点であり、難破船が頻繁に発生し、海岸は時折海が打ち上げる遺物の中に、これらの激動の時代の記憶を留めている。
