Plage d'Autavaux

Located on the northern shore of Lake Neuchâtel, about 7 km west of Neuchâtel, this beach is part of a lake landscape characteristic of the Swiss Jura. The lake, the largest body of water entirely within Switzerland, offers gentle shores here with the Jura mountains visible in the background. The coastal area combines public access points dotted with small natural coves, with discreet lakeside villages and preserved riparian vegetation. The beach consists of a narrow sandy strip, typical of Neuchâtel lakeside developments, exposed to northern winds and basin breezes. Unlike Plage de la Corbière, 0.9 km away and more frequented, this area retains a more secluded character. Direct access to the fine sand allows for gradual swimming; the waters remain cool even in summer, reflecting the lake's altitude and depth. The shore, without visible infrastructure, offers a sober and undeveloped ambiance, where visitors mingle with local fishermen and Sunday strollers. No supervision service is provided. The lack of formal parking and sanitary facilities reinforces the natural character of the place. Access is not arranged for people with reduced mobility. This beach is for self-sufficient swimmers seeking an experience without standardized tourist infrastructure.

About this spot

The toponym 'Autavaux' evokes the lowlands ('vaux') of the area, an ancient geographical term from the Neuchâtel Jura. This stretch of shore is part of the lacustrine history of the Jura, where Lake Neuchâtel, formed by post-Würm glacial melt, has shaped human activities since the Neolithic period. The northern shores, less densely urbanized than the Neuchâtel area, have retained their fishing vocation. Since the 19th century, professional net and trap fishing has remained a living practice here, and lakeside beaches continue to be places of local life rather than mass tourism, unlike the Vaudois resorts on the lake.
