Plage El Halq stretches along the Algerian Mediterranean coast, near the Oran wilaya, in the northwest of the country. Located about 35 km east of Oran, this beach is part of a fragmented coastline characterized by rocky coves and alternating sandy stretches, typical of this part of the Maghreb. The Mediterranean here has temperate waters, generally calm in summer, although subject to seasonal variations in the Mediterranean climate. El Halq's shore is distinguished by its less frequented character compared to its immediate neighbors: Plage DZ is 2.4 km away, and Saïdia Beach is 6.5 km away. Upon arrival, visitors discover a coastal expanse dominated by rock formations and small bays, punctuated by areas of fine sand. The atmosphere remains that of a little-developed Algerian coastal beach, far from European tourist standards, offering an authentic experience of the Maghrebi coastline. The low cliffs that partially border the site create microclimates and natural shelters appreciated on windy days. No supervision equipment or major infrastructure is reported on site. The beach does not benefit from the Blue Flag label and is not adapted for accessibility for people with reduced mobility. Access remains free and without formality, a common characteristic of less developed Algerian beaches. Visitors should plan their own equipment and provisions, as this portion of the coastline does not offer immediate commercial services.
El Halq means 'the ring' or 'the circle' in Arabic, likely a reference to the circular configuration of rock formations that frame certain coves in the area. This coastal zone, historically little documented in Western tourist guides, retains the imprint of Algerian coastal fishing traditions. Before the massive tourist development of the 1980s-1990s that transformed other Maghrebi coastlines, El Halq remained a beach for local fishermen and regional swimmers, thus preserving its character as a little-transformed Mediterranean coastline. Families from Oran traditionally came here on weekends, especially in summer, to escape the urban heat.
