Marsa Ben M'hidi stretches along the North Algerian coast, about 35 kilometers west of Oran, in the wilaya of Oran. This stretch of Mediterranean coast is characterized by a succession of small sandy bays separated by rocky promontories, typical of the Oran coastal profile. The shore, exposed to Atlantic swells that cross the Strait of Gibraltar, offers a constant marine dynamic, with depths gradually increasing towards the open sea. The beach itself features fine golden sand, of moderate width, stretching for about 800 meters. Unlike Plage Moscarda 1, located 1.4 kilometers to the east and known for being more crowded, Marsa Ben M'hidi retains a more discreet character, with regular local visitors but without intrusive tourist infrastructure. 4.7 kilometers to the west, Saïdia Beach offers more developed facilities; here, the experience remains that of an authentic coastal swim, where visitors mingle with fishermen and families from Algiers who come in the late afternoon. Direct access from the coastal road facilitates arrival, although parking remains informal. No lifeguard service is provided on this beach, and access for people with reduced mobility is not adapted. The site does not have the Blue Flag label. Visitors should bring their personal equipment and respect the weather conditions, especially in winter when the sea becomes rough. The proximity of small shops and Moorish cafes in the nearby hamlets allows for stocking up on water and snacks.
Marsa, an Arabic term meaning a port or natural cove, evokes the historical vocation of this coastline as a coastal anchorage. Ben M'hidi recalls the name of the Algerian revolutionary Larbi Ben M'hidi, a major figure in the War of Independence, whose memory remains embedded in local toponymy. These beaches of the Oran Dahra, formed by the erosion of Miocene limestones, are geological witnesses to Mediterranean tectonics. Local fishermen maintain age-old traditions of seine and line fishing, particularly active at dawn, offering an authentic spectacle to early morning visitors.
