Plage Mkhalled stretches along the northwestern Algerian coast, about 35 kilometers west of Oran, in the region of Sidi Bel Abbès. The coast here presents the typical character of the Algerian Mediterranean: a rocky shore dotted with sandy coves, where limestone cliffs gradually plunge towards a deep blue sea. The bay offers some natural protection from prevailing winds, creating relatively calm conditions compared to more exposed sectors of the coast. This beach is distinguished by its direct access from the coastal road and its local, less commercialized ambiance. In the immediate vicinity, Mkhalled Beach (0.3 km) and Plage mkhaled (0.4 km) form a set of three small bathing areas that almost overlap, while Plage Agla (2.6 km) and Al-Wardania Beach (3 km) mark the limits of a string of coves. The sand, where it exists, alternates with stretches of smooth pebbles and low rocks that facilitate entry into the water. The atmosphere remains that of a coast where seaside tourism has not erased local uses of fishing and family relaxation. The site has neither bathing supervision nor formal services such as toilets, showers, or designated parking. The absence of Blue Flag status reflects the current state of infrastructure. Access remains free and unrestricted, although the lack of PMR facilities limits accessibility for people with reduced mobility.
The toponym Mkhalled, of Amazigh origin, refers to the ancient history of the Algerian coastline, where coastal Berber populations have long practiced fishing and maritime trade. This region, between Oran and Sidi Bel Abbès, has experienced successive waves of Phoenician, Roman, and Arab settlement before becoming, in the Ottoman era, a transit point for Mediterranean merchant ships. Today, Plage Mkhalled remains a discreet bathing spot, frequented mainly by residents of the surrounding villages, offering them a Mediterranean respite away from the urban bustle of Oran.
