قاع السور

Located on the Algerian Mediterranean coast, about 15 km east of Algiers, this beach is part of a coastline characterized by alternating sandy coves and rock formations. The name "Qaâ Essour"—literally "the bottom of the wall" in Arabic—evokes the historical presence of coastal fortifications that once dotted this strategic region. The shore belongs to the Bay of Algiers, where the Mediterranean waters have a typical blue-green hue of the North African coasts, particularly transparent in summer. The beach consists of a strip of fine sand sloping gently towards the sea. Unlike neighboring beaches located 4.5 km and 4.6 km away, which experience higher attendance, this area remains more discreet, offering a less dense atmosphere. The regular bathymetric profile allows a gradual entry into the water, while the nearby coastal urban context (Algiers agglomeration) gives the site a peri-urban beach character rather than a wild one. The Aleppo pine and eucalyptus formations bordering the dune cordon constitute the dominant vegetation. Access remains simple from the Algiers coastal roads. The site has no official supervision or Blue Flag status. No major facilities (toilets, showers, restaurants) are documented on site, implying a visit with self-sufficiency. Access for people with reduced mobility is not provided.

About this spot

The name "Qaâ Essour" refers to the remains of the Ottoman period, when the Algiers coast was fortified against Barbary incursions and rival European powers. The "wall" likely refers to the remnants of defensive forts or ramparts that once dominated this sector. Today, these structures have largely disappeared, absorbed by the progressive urbanization of the Algiers suburbs. The beach itself remains a testament to the Mediterranean coastline as it presented itself to the inhabitants of the Algerian capital before the massification of seaside tourism.
