Plage du phare

Located on the Algerian Mediterranean coast, about 36.8°N and 2.95°E, this beach is part of the Mitidja coastline, a coastal region characterized by alternating fine sandy beaches and small rocky coves. The shore, facing northeast, benefits from direct exposure to moderate Mediterranean swells and extends along a relatively urbanized coast with successive small fishing ports and seaside residences. The area behind the beach, backed by port structures and facilities, bears witness to long-standing local use and a mixed vocation: bathing and water sports. Sand dominates the coastline's composition, offering a uniform and accessible surface. The spot is distinguished from its immediate neighbors by effective supervision—a rare element in this area—making it a landmark for safety-conscious swimmers. 300 meters to the north, Plage DZ offers a similar profile but is less regulated; to the southwest, Saint-Cloud Beach, 700 meters away, attracts a more residential clientele. The atmosphere remains that of a local beach, frequented by families and regular swimmers rather than passing tourist clientele. Access is permitted on a discretionary basis. The presence of lifeguards ensures daily supervision, a structuring element for local users. The absence of facilities for people with reduced mobility limits universal accessibility. No Blue Flag certification marks this site, which remains anchored in a logic of community use rather than tourist labeling.

About this spot

The name "Plage du phare" (Lighthouse Beach) refers to the historical presence of a maritime signaling structure, an essential visual landmark for coastal navigation before the GPS era. This coastal area, integrated into the extended Algiers agglomeration, bears the traces of seaside use dating back to the French protectorate, when the beaches of the Mitidja became relaxation spots for urban residents. The lighthouse itself, although partially disused, remains a landscape landmark. Today, this beach embodies the ordinary practice of Algerian Mediterranean bathing: a public space where supervision and regulated access meet the expectations of a dense coastal population and gradually established safety standards.
