Playa Las Escalicas

Playa Las Escalicas stretches along the Mediterranean coast of Almería in southeastern Spain, approximately 40 kilometers east of Almería city. This portion of the Andalusian shoreline, characterized by ochre cliffs and abrupt rocky formations, belongs to one of Europe's most arid coastal regions. The Mediterranean displays changing hues depending on light, oscillating between deep blue and pale turquoise, while the semi-desert hinterland imparts a mineral and austere atmosphere to this sector. The beach itself remains underdeveloped and preserves a pronounced wild character. Located just 400 meters from Cala del Sombrerico and 800 meters from Cala de Bordenares, it forms part of a string of small coves and rocky beaches punctuating this rugged coast. Upon arrival, visitors discover a narrow band of sand and pebbles dominated by rock walls plunging directly into the sea. The absence of major tourist facilities reinforces its relative isolation, though Playa El Perulejo (2.6 km) and Playa del Algarrobico (3.1 km) offer more accessible alternatives in the immediate vicinity. No swimming supervision is provided on the site. Access remains informal, without notable reception infrastructure, and the absence of Blue Flag certification confirms its status as an uncertified beach. Visitors must anticipate complete self-sufficiency: no dedicated parking, showers, or amenities. This configuration makes it a destination for experienced swimmers capable of managing Mediterranean coastal conditions without assistance.

About this spot

The name "Escalicas" likely evokes the small ladders or rocky steps characteristic of this portion of the Almería coast, where geological formations shaped by erosion create natural accesses to the sea. This coast, dominated by Jurassic schists and limestone, long served as refuge for local fishermen and smugglers during past centuries. Today, Playa Las Escalicas remains one of the least frequented beaches in the sector, a remnant of the Spanish Mediterranean shoreline before the mass tourism boom of the 1970s-1980s.
