Playa El Perulejo

Playa El Perulejo stretches along the Algerian Mediterranean coast, near the Oran region's coastline, in the area where limestone cliffs plunge towards an intense blue sea. The site is located about 1.1 km east of Playa Fuente las Cabras and 2.6 km west of Playa Las Escalicas, in the heart of a succession of beaches and small coves that characterize this stretch of the North African coast. The coast here alternates between eroded rock formations and pockets of fine sand, shaped by Mediterranean currents and the millennia-old action of waves. The beach itself consists of golden sand, relatively preserved despite the absence of official supervision. The shore opens widely towards the sea, without major natural protection, exposing bathers to the current marine conditions. The atmosphere remains that of an undeveloped coastal area, where sand meets clear water and visitors find tranquility away from standardized tourist facilities. Unlike the more developed resorts in the region, the site retains a natural character, with direct access from local coastal paths. No specific services are reported on site: no toilets, showers, dedicated parking, or catering. The beach does not have Blue Flag status and is not supervised by lifeguards. Access for people with reduced mobility is not provided. Visitors must come equipped with their own resources and plan for self-sufficiency for a day at the seaside.

About this spot

The name "Perulejo" likely refers to a phonetic corruption of a local Arabic designation, a common phenomenon in Algerian coastal nomenclature where Berber, Arabic, and Spanish linguistic layers have overlapped over the centuries. This region of the Oran coast, formerly frequented by Phoenicians and Romans, then by Barbary corsairs, retains traces of these successive passages in its fragmented toponyms. Today, Playa El Perulejo remains a discreet place, little documented in tourist circuits, where local fishermen and coastal hikers constitute the majority of visitors, perpetuating an intimate and little-publicized relationship with this stretch of the Mediterranean.
