Plage Sonagther 2 extends along the northwestern Algerian coast, near the Chlef region, in the bay bordering the Mediterranean coast between Oran and Algiers. This stretch of shore is part of a group of coastal beaches characterized by shallow waters and direct access to the Mediterranean. The surrounding landscape combines sandy expanses with the remnants of discontinuous coastal development, typical of this region where tourist facilities remain modest compared to European seaside resorts. The beach is distinguished from its immediate neighbors by being less frequented than Plage Cheliff, located 1.7 km to the west, and less developed than Plage Sonagther, its namesake 2.3 km away. Upon arrival, visitors find an open stretch of coastline, without notable facilities, where contact with the sea remains direct and unmediated. The general atmosphere reflects local rather than tourist use, with seasonal attendance marked by the summer months. No lifeguard service is provided on this stretch of coast, and access remains free but lacks facilities for people with reduced mobility. Plage Sakhra, 3.1 km to the east, offers an alternative in the area. Plage Sonagther 2's status as an unlabeled site reflects the absence of formal environmental certifications, a common characteristic of Algerian beaches outside major tourist areas.
The name Sonagther, of local origin, designates a portion of the Chlef coastline shaped by the alluvial deposits of the Cheliff River, the region's main coastal river. This area, historically less densely populated than Algerian coastal urban centers, has seen gradual development since the 1990s. The numbered beaches in this sector reflect administrative nomenclature rather than a distinct tourist designation. During the summer of 2019, local initiatives attempted to promote this coast to regional bathers, but without significant hotel infrastructure, it remains a local destination for residents of Chlef and surrounding towns.
