Plage El Morjane

Plage El Morjane stretches along the Algerian coast in the Oran region, about 35 kilometers west of the city. This stretch of the Mediterranean coast is part of a string of beaches that dot the Gulf of Arzew, characterized by shallow bays and shores alternating between sand and rock formations. The Mediterranean here presents changing hues depending on the season and time of day, shifting from deep blue to the green-gray of calmer coastal waters. The beach itself is part of a coastal area particularly dense in terms of bathing offerings: Doriane Beach is located 1.2 kilometers to the east, while Plage de Rio Salado is only 1.3 kilometers away. Despite this proximity, El Morjane retains its own character, attracting a local clientele who appreciate its direct access and less formalized atmosphere than the neighboring resorts. The shore offers a natural setting without imposing developments, where the sand gradually meets the calm waters of the bay. Access to the beach remains rudimentary: no major infrastructure is reported, and swimming is done without supervision. The absence of environmental labels or structured services makes it a destination for visitors seeking an unadorned bathing experience, particularly popular during the summer months with residents of the surrounding towns.

About this spot

El Morjane, whose name evokes in colloquial Arabic the pearl ("el morjan"), reflects the maritime heritage of this Oran coast, long disputed between Mediterranean powers. The Arzew region, which encompasses this coastline, underwent major economic transformation in the 20th century with the rise of liquefied natural gas, but its beaches retain the more reserved atmosphere of traditional Algerian seaside resorts. Local inhabitants have been coming here for generations for family swims in the late afternoon, when the day's heat begins to subside and the low-angled light gilds the gulf waters.
