Büyük Liman Plajı extends along the Black Sea coast, in the Bithynia-Paphlagonia region (Karadeniz in Turkish), on the northern coast of Turkey. Located immediately adjacent to the rocky coastline characteristic of this region, the site benefits from direct exposure to the temperate waters of the Black Sea. The surrounding shore alternates between sandy beaches and rocky formations, typical of Anatolian coasts where river valleys carve sandy enclaves into a steep coastal landscape. This fine sandy beach occupies a central position in a cluster of local seaside resorts. Only 0.3 km to the west is Küçük Liman Plajı, its smaller counterpart, while İnce Kum Plajı stretches 2.3 km to the east. The site is distinguished by its accessibility and functional layout: a regular sand strip, well-defined, offering a gradual entry into the water. The area remains relatively spared from massive developments, retaining the atmosphere of a local seaside resort rather than a saturated tourist destination. The beach has regular supervision, ensuring a safe environment for swimming. A water park is located 0.8 km away, complementing the area's water leisure offerings. No Blue Flag certification has been awarded to the site. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not developed.
The name "Büyük Liman" literally means "Great Port" in Turkish, a direct reference to the historical configuration of this anchorage on the Pontic coast. This region, the ancient province of Bithynia in antiquity, long served as a commercial crossroads between inland Anatolia and the Mediterranean maritime routes. The sandy beaches of this coast, rare and precious, were formed by the accumulation of river sediments in sheltered bays. Today, Büyük Liman Plajı remains a relaxation spot for residents of neighboring coastal towns, attracting swimmers each summer who appreciate its direct access and its environment preserved from large tourist developments.
