Platja del Serrallo

Platja del Serrallo extends along the southern coast of Catalonia, in the province of Tarragona, a few kilometers south of the Ebro Delta. This section of the Mediterranean coast is characterized by a succession of small beaches and coves, framed by wetlands and pine forests that descend to the sea. The shore belongs to one of Spain's most dynamic coastal regions, where the influence of the delta shapes a unique landscape combining lagoons, canals, and fine sandy beaches. The beach itself occupies an intermediate position in this coastal string: Platja dels Eucaliptus is located 2.2 km to the north, while Platja de Riumar stretches 8.2 km further south. Serrallo retains a less urbanized character than its immediate neighbors, offering direct access to a stretch of coast where the deltaic nature still prevails. The atmosphere remains that of local swimming, without intrusive tourist facilities, where visitors rediscover the essence of the Catalan Mediterranean coast: fine sand, clear water in summer, and a low-angled light in the late afternoon that illuminates the flat expanses of the region. No supervision service is provided on site. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is not guaranteed. The beach does not have the Blue Flag label. Visitors should plan their visit by bringing essentials, as the place operates on a self-sufficiency basis: fresh water, sunscreen, and personal equipment remain indispensable.

About this spot

Serrallo derives its name from the Catalan 'serral,' meaning a ridge or rocky crest—a reference to the deltaic geomorphology of the region. This coastal area is part of the unique geological context of the Ebro Delta, one of the most important Mediterranean deltas, formed by alluvial deposits from the river over millennia. During the 20th century, the delta underwent radical transformation: intensive agriculture (especially rice cultivation) and tourist development restructured the landscape. Platja del Serrallo, however, retains the memory of this evolution, remaining an anchor point for local fishermen and the inhabitants of Tortosa who, since medieval times, have maintained close ties with the deltaic coast.
