필왁(Pilwak)이라는 이름은 마나보 또는 마라나오 현지 언어에서 유래한 것으로 보이지만, 지역 관광 자료에는 정확한 어원이 거의 문서화되어 있지 않습니다. 역사적으로 루마드 원주민들이 거주했던 카라가 지역은 점진적인 해변 관광이 도래하기 전 오랫동안 전통적인 어업 지역으로 사용되었습니다. '셰이드스'(Shades)라는 별명은 민다나오의 기후에서 귀중한 자산인 해안 캐노피가 만드는 자연적인 그늘진 지역의 중요성을 반영하며, 이곳의 온도는 정기적으로 32°C에 달합니다.
