Located on the shores of Lake Geneva, in the immediate vicinity of Lausanne, the Vieux-Stand Port Beach occupies a strategic position in the historic port area of the Vaud capital. The alpine shore unfolds its typical mineral character here: cold, translucent waters reflecting the Alps from the south bank of the lake, while the urban landscape gradually rises towards the Swiss plateau. This portion of the Lake Geneva shoreline remains less densely developed than the surrounding tourist beaches, retaining the functional atmosphere of the old port. The site is distinguished by its stone surface, which contrasts sharply with the fine sandy beaches located 1.1 km away (Plage CH) and 3.7 km away (Vieux-Port d'Ouchy swimming area). This rocky configuration requires visitors to be somewhat prepared—water shoes are recommended—but it preserves the authenticity of the place, far from the standardized development of seaside resorts. Direct exposure to the lake offers swimming without natural protection against waves, while the proximity of the port gives the site an authentic maritime feel, where pleasure boats and lake activities constitute the daily scenery. No supervision equipment is present on site, and access is not adapted for people with reduced mobility. The status of a non-Blue Flag beach reflects the absence of formalized services: no toilets, showers, or restaurant facilities. This setup makes it a free swimming spot, devoid of tourist infrastructure, intended for informed users of Lake Geneva seeking an experience free from commercial constraints.
Vieux-Stand historically designates the old port area of Lausanne, where loading facilities and lake arsenals once stood. The name evokes these vanished structures, remnants of a time when the lake was the region's main commercial artery before the construction of alpine roads. The beach itself, backed by renovated quays, retains this port memory in its mineral layout and working atmosphere. Upon arrival, one perceives the heritage of this past: the flat stones that pave the bottom reflect ancestral bank stabilization techniques, while the remains of wrought iron moorings recall the steamships that plied Lake Geneva in the 19th century.
